Description

Good For The Ground 10 Biodegradable Bags

As part of our initiative to make Good for the Ground bags more widely available we developed a Home Pack range. Made in two different sizes of 10 bags each the Home Packs are designed to bring environmentally friendly packaging to your home.

Large Home Pack 300mm x 130mm with 80mm gusset and
10 stickers

Special Features
Each pack comes with a set of 10 stickers to help seal the bags or write notes for the freezer. The ‘dead-fold’ property also means that you can simply fold over and press down or clip with a clothes peg to seal. Bags are re-usable. Just rinse out and dry. The side gusset makes the bags open up and provide more space for those sandwiches or left over cheese.

  • Material: The bags are made from PLA (polylactic acid), a polymer derived from starch (corn, sugar-cane, or wood-based) rather than fossil fuels.

  • Compostable / Biodegradable: According to Good For The Ground, the film is compostable / biodegradable.

  • Manufacturing Details: The PLA film is produced in France and imported to South Africa; the conversion into bags / final packaging is done locally.

  • Pack Configuration: There is a “Home Pack” version that includes 10 clear plastic bags + 10 stickers to help seal the bags or label contents.

  • Bag Features / Properties:

    • You can freeze these bags.

    • They have high transparency and a glossy surface.

    • Good water-vapour permeability — helps keep food like bread or pastries crisp.

    • Resistant to oil, fat, and alcohol.

    • “Dead-fold” property: you can fold the bag over and it stays folded neatly.

    • Twistable: good for closing with a twist or tie.

    • Has a surface good for sealing (e.g., heat seal) and can be labeled.

Advantages / Use Cases:

  • Eco-friendly packaging: Because the bags are plant-based (starch-derived), they are a more sustainable alternative to standard petroleum-based plastic bags.

  • Food Storage: Great for storing food items — Good For The Ground suggests use for bread, vegetables, cheese, sweets, etc.

  • Home Composting: Bags are intended to be compostable — though how they break down may depend on the conditions (e.g., home compost vs industrial compost).

  • Reusable: According to Good For The Ground, the bags can be rinsed out and reused.

Things to Be Careful About:

  • Composting Conditions: “Biodegradable” doesn’t always mean everything will break down quickly in a home compost; actual decomposition may depend on the temperature, microbes, and composting setup.

  • Certification / Standards: I didn’t find clear, independent certification (like BPI / TUV) on the Good For The Ground website (based on my sources), so check current packaging.

  • Storage: PLA-based bags may be sensitive to heat / UV over long-term storage.

  • Cost: Biodegradable / compostable packaging is often more expensive than standard plastic; consider how you’ll use them.
