Description

St John’s Wort 50ml

This product is a herbal tincture labeled for relief of depression, insomnia, neuralgia and hysteria.

Ingredients:

  • Hypericum perforatum (St John’s Wort)

  • Ethanol (Alcohol)

  • Purified Water

Benefits:

  • Helps support mood balance and relieve mild to moderate depression, by influencing neurotransmitter activity (serotonin, dopamine, nor-epinephrine).

  • May assist with insomnia and improved sleep, especially where mood or low energy are factors.

  • May help with neuralgia and nerve-related pain, as listed by the product page (“neuralgia”).

  • Useful for symptoms of stress, anxiety, and nervous-system over-arousal (listed under “hysteria” in older terminology).

  • Has traditional uses for supporting skin health, such as treatment of minor burns, wound healing and skin injuries (when used appropriately) in herbal tradition (less specifically confirmed for the tincture).

⚠️ Important to keep in mind:

  • While beneficial, St John’s Wort can interact significantly with many medications (such as antidepressants, oral-contraceptives, warfarin, etc.).

  • It may increase sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without professional advice.

Historical Background:

  • Ancient Origins:
St John’s Wort has been used for over 2,000 years in traditional medicine. The ancient Greeks — including Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Galen — prescribed it for treating nervous disorders, wounds, and melancholy (what we now call depression).

  • Name & Folklore:
The plant is named after St John the Baptist, as it typically blooms around St John’s Day (June 24). In medieval Europe, it was believed to ward off evil spirits and protect against lightning — often hung over doors during midsummer festivals.

  • Traditional European Use:
Through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, herbalists used St John’s Wort for “nervous afflictions”, insomnia, and wound healing. The bright yellow flowers were also infused in oil to create a red healing oil (still sold today) used for burns and bruises.

  • Modern Herbal Medicine:
In the late 20th century, scientific studies confirmed its effect on mild to moderate depression, showing it acts on serotonin and dopamine pathways in the brain.
Today, it is one of the most studied herbal antidepressants, widely used in Germany, South Africa, and Europe as an alternative or adjunct to pharmaceutical antidepressants.
