Description

NOW – Taurine 500mg 100 Veg Caps

Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid — not used for protein synthesis but found free in many tissues (especially in the nervous system). It helps stabilise cell membranes, support the transport of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium in and out of cells. It also helps generate and regulate nerve impulses and supports normal fluid balance. In addition, it plays a role in visual pathways and the brain and nervous system, working alongside glycine and GABA as a neurotransmitter.

  • This is a supplement providing 500 mg of taurine (free-form amino acid) per vegetarian capsule.

  • Taurine is described as “conditionally essential” (meaning the body usually makes enough, but under certain conditions additional intake may be beneficial).

  • The product supports nervous system health, fluid balance, and visual pathways, as well as electrolyte transport among cells.

  • Capsule form is vegetarian/vegan friendly (veg capsules).

Key Features & Ingredients:

  • Active ingredient: Taurine (Free-Form) 500 mg per capsule.

  • Other ingredients: Rice flour, hypromellose (capsule shell).

  • Free from: According to listings, “Not manufactured with wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients.”

  • Additional product claims: Non-GMO, vegan/vegetarian, dairy free, soy free.

Potential Benefits:

  1. Cell hydration & electrolyte balance
Taurine helps regulate the movement of water and minerals (like sodium, calcium, potassium) in and out of cells.
This may support proper fluid balance and might explain benefits in tissues like muscle, heart and brain.

  2. Support for digestion / bile salt formation
Taurine is involved in the formation of bile salts in the liver, which help digest fats.
This suggests a role in metabolic health (fat metabolism etc).

  3. Cardiovascular & blood-pressure support
Some meta-analyses indicate taurine supplementation may help reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, improve some cardiovascular markers.
For example: in one meta-analysis, taurine significantly reduced SBP (by about 4 mm Hg) and DBP (by ~1.5 mm Hg) in certain groups.
It may also have beneficial effects in heart-failure or cardiac function contexts (though evidence is still limited).

  4. Metabolic syndrome / glucose / lipid support
Research suggests taurine may improve markers involved in metabolic syndrome: fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure.
    In one meta-analysis of ~25 RCTs (1 024 participants) taurine significantly lowered FBG (~-5.9 mg/dL) and TG (~-18 mg/dL).

  5. Neuroprotection & brain support
There is evidence (mostly animal/experimental) that taurine may help protect neurons, modulate inflammation in the brain, support cognitive health.
For example: it’s abundant in retina and brain tissues and may help protect against oxidative damage or excitotoxicity.

  6. Antioxidant / anti-inflammatory effects
Taurine has been found to act as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers in some studies.
This may underlie some of its broader proposed benefits in metabolic health, aging, etc.

⚠️ Important Considerations:

  • Even though the product is well described, supplements are not substitutes for good diet or medical treatment.

  • Because taurine affects electrolyte transport and may have effects on conditions involving fluid balance, heart rhythm, or blood pressure, if you have heart conditions, kidney issues, or are on medications, you should get medical advice.

  • The dosage of “1 to 4 capsules daily” means amount can vary widely; you should align with your personal needs and ideally under supervision.

  • Always check the actual bottle you purchase for expiry date, authenticity, correct packaging.

  • As with all supplements, individual response may vary; benefits are not guaranteed and some uses are less well-supported by strong clinical evidence.
